Frustrated by the singular focus on photovoltaics by the solar industry and the lack of incorporation of low-cost passive solar strategies into new homes, Bob Chew, a leading solar pioneer, partnered with Donald Powers and Douglas Kallfelz of Union Studio to reinvent the solar home. All three have a passion for sustainability and home design and are dedicated to using their talents to design the next generation of solar homes.

After Bob graduated with a degree in Environmental Science from New England College in 1973, he spent the next thirty-five years as a successful eco-entrepreneur. His first company, R.W. Chew Co., Inc. was started in Barrington, Rhode Island, and was a leading green design/build firm that also specialized in solar thermal systems and passive solar sunspaces. In 2000, Bob founded SolarWrights, a company that specialized in designing, installing, and servicing photovoltaic systems and solar thermal systems. Read more…

Founding Partner, Union Studio Architecture & Community Design

Donald has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of architectural practice. In recent years his work has concentrated on integrated, mixed-use planning and architectural design with the goal of creating truly diverse and vibrant places. A 13 year association with the Congress for the New Urbanism and frequent collaboration with some of the best firms in the country doing traditional urban design and architecture has honed his expertise in the technique and art of creating liveable communities and cherished places. Douglas has over 17 years of experience across a wide range of residential, institutional and civic project types. As a Partner at Union Studio, Douglas has been the Principal-in-Charge for several of the firm’s award winning sustainable communities, civic buildings and residences. With a background in both design and business, Douglas blends his project leadership and design responsibilities with overall management and strategic planning for the office. Read more…
